Seniors Enjoy a Trip to Abingdon, Virginia

Sevier County seniors experience a wonderful afternoon at the theatre during monthly Sarah’s Fund Day.

The Dolly Parton My People Senior Activity Center recently held its July Sarah’s Fund Day, and this month’s attendees couldn’t wait to hit the road in the activity center’s new handicap accessible bus. The multi-passenger vehicle is equipped with a lift, which makes getting on and off much easier. Enthusiasm filled the air as they boarded the bus to head to Abingdon, VA.

Lunch and Laughs.

This month’s adventure included a stop for lunch at Aubrey’s where the ladies enjoyed a delicious meal alongside another fun group of activity center attendees. The highlight of the trip was their visit to the historical Barter Theatre in Abingdon, VA, to see a comic theatrical adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel, Sense and Sensibility. The ladies enjoyed the hilarious play and the beauty of the theatre.

Dating back to 1876, the Barter Theatre has featured a wide variety of events from musicals to plays to concerts. Early on, theatre-goers had the option of paying a 35 cent entry fee or the equivalent amount in produce. The ladies from the activity center were excited to be treated to the show in memory of Sarah Scott Timmons, sponsored by the SD Pros Sarah’s Fund Day. Activities Assistant for the Dolly Parton My People Activity Center, Ashley Sellars, shared, “Oh, what a wonderful time we had at the theatre on Tuesday! Several of the ladies had never been to a play before. It was a long day, but worth every second of it.” She added, “Thank you so much for the opportunity to give these ladies a day they will never forget.”
